Gardaí investigate Mullingar house fire

Garda technical experts have spent the day in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, investigating the cause of a house fire in which a mother and her young child were critically injured.

The fire broke out at a house in Grange Crescent in the town at around 1.50am.

There were six people in the house at the time, an adult couple and four children aged two, six, seven and 13.

Two gardaí made several rescue attempts, searching the house for the two-year-old girl before she was eventually found trapped inside and taken to safety.

The six residents of the house, along with the two gardaí, were all taken to hospital for treatment.

The 40-year-old mother remains in a critical condition at Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

Two of her children were taken to Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin where the two-year-old is in a critical condition.
