Tourists injured in pony and trap crash

Four Italian tourists and a local man who were involved in a pony-and-trap accident on Inis Mór have been airlifted to hospital in Galway.

Four Italian tourists and a local man who were involved in an accident on Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Islands, have been airlifted to hospital in Galway.

The five were injured when the pony and trap they were travelling in overturned on a road near Kilronan. The accident happened at about 3pm.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard service said that the five were suffering from head, chest and other injuries.

They were flown by the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter from Kilronan to Galway University Hospital.

The five who were injured were four Italian tourists and the local man who was driving the trap.
