Five people were injured when their hotel lift fell at least three floors before hitting the ground in Killarney, Co Kerry, this afternoon.

It is believed the lift plunged from the second floor down to the car park basement at the Plaza Hotel in the town centre just after 2.30pm.

The five - who are believed to be from Kildare and Dublin and members of a wedding party - were taken from the lift by members of the fire service.

Five ambulances and a number of garda vehicles also attended the scene.

The five were taken to Kerry General Hospital, however their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A spokeswoman for the hotel siad the lift had been inspected and serviced in the last few weeks.

She said the scene had been sealed off and the hotel would cooperate with investigations into the incident.

The Health and Safety Authority has said it will be investigating the incident.
