The death has occurred of former Fine Gael TD and Senator Myles Staunton.
Mr Staunton, 75, and was a well-known figure in his native Co Mayo.
He was a TD for four years from 1973 and served a number of terms in the Seanad.
Cathaoirleach Senator Paddy Burke said that he is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Myles Staunton.
He said Myles was a true parliamentarian, public representative and servant of both the State and Co Mayo.
He carried out his parliamentary duties over a 12 year career in the Oireachtas with great foresight and dignity, he added.
