Fire at Wicklow county campus under control

Seven units of Wicklow fire brigade have brought a fire at the Wicklow County Campus in Rathnew under control.

The fire broke out last night at Clermont Hall, which offers part-time third-level courses.

There were no reports of injuries and gardaí say the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Wicklow County Council is continuing to assess the damage caused by the fire.

It is understood that the bulk of the damage occurred in the roof over the boardroom, but the other buildings in the former convent are unaffected.

An information event being run there by Carlow IT this evening was due to proceed as planned.

The Wicklow County Campus is an education and enterprise development joint venture between Wicklow County Council and Carlow IT.

The council bought the buildings and land of the former Clermont School in Rathnew in 2006 and has since developed it as an education and innovation centre.
