Enda Kenny - Government is committed to meeting the challenges

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has addressed members of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly on employment and economic recovery.

Mr Kenny said while the economy had a terrible impact on Ireland's reputation abroad, the Government is committed to meeting the challenges the country faces and it is meeting its targets.

Mr Kenny said the country's export growth was exceptional and foreign companies in Ireland are confident there would be no change in the corporation tax rate.

He said the Government's jobs initiative would begin to yield results within months.

The assembly was also told that Irish exports will exceed pre-recession levels by the end of the year.

The two-day meeting is taking place in Cork.

Earlier, Enterprise Ireland Chief Executive Frank Ryan said he is confident Irish exports will have exceeded pre-recession levels by the end of the year.

Speaking in Cork at the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly, Mr Ryan said the economic recovery in international markets was fuelling increased demand for Irish products and services.

Mr Ryan pointed out that Ireland has had 22 months of continuous export growth, which was the second best record in the EU.

The Enterprise Ireland's chief said he believes that Ireland can be the comeback economy of Europe.

The assembly also passed a motion condemning the murder of PSNI officer Ronan Kerr in April, describing it as a 'cowardly atrocity'.
