The death has taken place of Pat Sweeney, a former long-serving Industrial Correspondent of RTÉ News.
Pat Sweeney was 73 and originally from Kilkenny.
He worked on newspapers in Kilkenny and Co Kerry and later the Irish Independent in Dublin.
He joined the staff in RTÉ in the mid 1960s and was involved in the coverage of Northern Affairs at the start of the Troubles.
He was Industrial Correspondent and later Industrial Editor in RTÉ during the 1970s and 1980s. He was respected for the precision of his coverage and commentary during long periods of industrial unrest. He won several awards for his work.
Mr Sweeney was a great lover of music and was for a time a member of the Glasnevin Musical Society.
He stepped down from his position in RTÉ in the early 1990s and worked for several years as Communications Officer for employers' group IBEC.
Mr Sweeney's wife, Monica, died six years ago. One of their sons, Dermot, passed away only six weeks ago.
Mr Sweeney is survived by his daughter Marie, sons Shane and Conor, sister Mary, brothers Jim and Ned, and three grandchildren.
