The inspection was ordered by Pope Benedict XVI following his March 2010 letter to Catholics here on the child abuse crisis.

He said it would 'assist the local Church on her path of renewal'.

The Vatican statement says it does not envisage further visits to the four Archdioceses and Irish-run seminaries and that reports on them have already been delivered to it.

But some religious orders and congregations will be inspected on foot of Rome's analysis of responses to questionnaires that were sent to all institutes with religious houses in Ireland.

The statement says that in the coming months the competent Vatican departments 'will give indications' to the bishops 'for the spiritual renewal of the dioceses and seminaries' and to the leaders of orders for the renewal of those bodies.
