Minister of state for the Gaeltacht Dinny McGinley has said that Údarás na Gaeltachta will no longer have an elected board, and the future board will be greatly reduced from its current size.
Mr McGinley said that Údarás will have to 'co-operate with other enterprise agencies' when it comes to future job creation.
He said that further details regarding the co-operation will not be revealed until legislation is prepared.
Mr McGinley was addressing the current Údarás na Gaeltachta board at a meeting in Falcarragh, Co Donegal.
Another proposal is that the Gaeltacht will be defined in future on linguistic criteria, rather than on a geographical basis as is currently the case.
It was also announced that the statutory status would be given to areas outside of the existing Gaeltacht in which there is a critical mass of community and State support for the Irish language.
These areas will be known as 'network Gaeltacht.'
