1,676 complaints to advertising authority

The annual report of the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland shows the body dealt with 1,676 complaints last year.

The majority of the complaints concerned misleading claims in advertisements or content offensive to complainants.

The complaints committee of the ASAI upheld complaints in relation to 89 ads and rejected those relating to 38 others.

There was also a notable increase in complaints made by competitors in the industry. Of those 118 complaints, 22 were upheld.

The ASAI is a self-regulatory body set up and financed by the advertising industry that monitors standards in advertising and sales promotion.
