Three men have been arrested in relation to a fatal shooting in Co Down last night.

The 36-year-old victim, who is understood to have been originally from Lithuania, died after he was shot in the chest.

The three men arrested are 26, 31 and 36 years of age.

It is understood that two shots were fired following an altercation between two groups of foreign nationals in Kilkeel.

Police said they believe the disturbances were triggered in the Hawood Way area of the town around 9pm when a group of people attacked a house.

The dispute then moved to Rooney Park where at least two shots were fired on the street some time after 10pm, fatally injuring one man.

DUP South Down Assembly candidate Jim Wells said there was an ongoing feud between Eastern Europeans living in the area.

He continued, 'The shooting seems to have been the culmination of a series of chaotic events in the town over the course of Saturday evening.'

Jim Wells said that 'the community is shocked that this feud, which was not of their making, spilled on to the streets of their town on such an important weekend in the Christian calendar.'

One of the suspects is being treated in hospital for a gunshot wound while the other two men are still being questioned by the police in Antrim.
