A woman has died and seven others have been injured in a two-car crash on the N71 Clonakilty to Rosscarbery road in Cork.

The crash happened at around 11am at Bohonagh, Rosscarbery, at a bend in the road.

There were five occupants in one of the cars, which was travelling west towards Rosscarbery. There were seven occupants, two adults and five children, in the other car - a people-carrier - travelling east towards Clonakilty.

The deceased and those who were more seriously injured were in the car travelling west.

One of the injured is described as being in a serious condition, while the other three are said to be stable.

They are being treated at Cork University Hospital.

All the occupants of the people carrier have since been released from hospital.

The road where the crash occurred has been closed pending an examination by garda forensic road crash investigators.

Gardaí in Clonakilty are appealing for witnesses and people who were travelling on the road around the time of the crash to contact them.
