One man has died and a second man has been taken to hospital after they were overcome by fumes while working on a septic tank attached to the Garryvoe Hotel in east Cork.

The alarm was raised shortly after 1.30pm when the men were found unconscious in a shed near the tank.

The two employees of Munster Drain Services are understood to have been working on the site for a number of days.

Despite the efforts of the emergency services and gardaí who gave CPR, one man was declared dead at the scene.

The second was removed by ambulance to the Mercy University Hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition.

The Health and Safety Authority and gardaí have confirmed that separate investigations are under way.

The scene remains sealed off pending the arrival of a garda forensic team and investigators from the HSA.

A truck belonging to Munster Drain Services has also been sealed off.
