The death has occurred of former Irish Independent editor and RTÉ Information and Publications head Louis McRedmond.
Mr McRedmond is survived by his wife Maeve and children David, Anne, Michael and Elizabeth.
The NUJ described Louis McRedmond as a pioneering figure in Irish media, saying he was a distinguished journalist, educationalist and media historian.
'Generations of journalists have reason to be grateful to Louis McRedmond, the first director of the original School of Journalism at the College of Commerce, Rathmines.'
'He brought to journalism erudition coupled with a strong commitment to the highest principles of his profession. As an editor he was meticulous and his legal background served him in good stead.'
In a statement, RTÉ paid tribute to 'a significant contributor to the media in Ireland through his own journalism and writing, his editorship of the Irish Independent and his time in senior management at RTÉ.'
