Two pedestrians have died in separate road crashes in Co Kildare.

A 59-year-old man died when he was struck by a car at Silliot Hill in Kildare town at around 7.30am.

His body has been removed to Naas General Hospital.

Anyone with information is asked to call gardaí in Naas on 045-527730.

Elsewhere, a 33-year-old man died after he was knocked down by a car on the N9, on the outskirts of Castledermot, at around 10.20pm last night.

He was taken to Naas General Hospital, but died a short time later.

Gardaí have asked witnesses to contact them at Athy Garda Station on 059-8634210, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111 or any garda station.

Kildare County Council's road safety officer Declan Keogh has warned people of the importance and invaluable use of wearing a high visibility vest.

Mr Keogh said: 'Many people who walk along the road may in general be familiar with the road, however, if they are not visible to other road users by what ever means, their chances of being seeing is reduced to almost zero, until it's too late.'
