Dr Patrick Lee - Admitted skimming over biopsy report

Garda Supt Martin Dorney from Waterfall, Ballincollig, Co Cork, who was misdiagnosed when he was suffering from malignant melanoma, has died.

His GP, Dr Pat Lee, appeared before a Medical Council fitness to practise inquiry last year on misconduct charges.

Mr Dorney, a married father-of-three, went to Dr Lee in August 2003 with concerns about a mole on his right thigh.

Dr Lee removed the mole and later told Mr Dorney the results of a biopsy indicatated that it was benign.

However, he failed to tell Mr Dorney that the report advised that further surgery was necessary.

Dr Lee later admitted that he had skimmed the report and failed to notice the recommendation.

The Fitness to Practise Committee recommended Dr Lee be suspended from practising for three months.
