Met Éireann has forecast a return to freezing weather over the coming days.

Temperatures are set to fall to -1C tomorrow night as people ring in the New Year.

Sharp frost and temperatures of -4C are expected on Saturday night with -6C forecast for Sunday night.

The renewed cold conditions will coincide with many people returning to work after the Christmas, New Year holiday period.

Met Éireann's forecast for the start of next week suggests it will be cold with overnight rain moving southwards and turning to sleet or snow over high ground.

Sub-zero temperatures last week caused widespread disruption to transport resulting in thousands of people failing to make it home for Christmas.

Dublin Airport is to review its procedures for handling severe weather emergencies after the heavy snowfall before Christmas led to many flight cancellations and delays.
