Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to last night's three-car collision near Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan, in which three people lost their lives.

Two men, a pregnant woman and her unborn child died in the collision.

39-year-old Roisín Connolly, of Grace Park Road in Drumcondra in Dublin, died in hospital this morning.

She was five months pregnant. Efforts by medical staff to save her baby were unsuccessful.

Two passengers in another car - Paul Carroll, 27, of Dun Heeda, Kingscourt, Co Meath and 28-year-old Glenn Curtis of Dunroe, Nobber, Co Meath - died at the scene last night.

Three people remain in hospital. The occupants of a third car have been treated for minor injuries.

Two children, aged 2 and 13 months, who were travelling with their parents in one of the cars were unhurt.

The collision happened 3km outside of Carrickmacross on the N2 Carrickmacross to Ardee road at around 6.30pm last night.

Garda Superintendent Noel Cunningham described the accident as 'a horrendous occurrence'.

The N2 Dublin/Monaghan road reopened this evening and all diversions have been lifted.
