Met Éireann has issued a severe weather alert forecasting snow for most areas of the country over the next five days.
It says initial indications are that this cold spell will not be as severe as the previous one.
Joan Blackburn of Met Éireann says the northwest should see snow tomorrow with all areas of the country at risk on Friday. On Sunday and Monday the east will be most at risk.
Sean O'Neill of the National Roads Authority says the 15,000 tonnes of salt stocks should be enough to keep open national routes until more supplies arrive in the middle of next week.
At the height of the severe weather last week the country was going through 5,000 tonnes a day, but he pointed out that indications are that this cold spell will not be as severe.
Michael Philips of Dublin City Council said water restrictions will have to continue but will start at 10pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to facilitate pubs and restaurants.
This will also mean later resumption of full water supply at 9am on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
The council says it intends to have full supply of water to householders from 23 December to 28 December.
