The Samaritans says it has seen a rise in the number of calls it receives as a direct result of the recession.
An impact report for Ireland from October 2009 to November 2010 shows the number of calls went up by 13,000, a 5% increase.
The organisation, which has been operating in Ireland for 50 years, says not only the number but also the nature of calls has changed since the economic decline began.
Volunteers who man the helpline say the intensity of calls and levels of distress and anxiety being experienced by callers is more severe than in previous years.
According to Samaritans’ Director Suzanne Costello, there is a definite correlation between the downturn and the demand for the service offered by the organisation.
Many problems being experienced were exacerbated by financial difficulties, according to callers.
An average of 669 calls per day are made to their helpline number, 1850-609090.
The organisation says the small cost of calling is deterring some people and it is working to provide a freephone number in line with a recommendation from the European Commission.
