Labour MEP Alan Kelly has announced that he will seek his party's nomination to stand in Tipperary North in the next General Election.

Mr Kelly will put himself before the local organisation's selection convention next Friday night.

It is understood the Ireland South MEP had talks with Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore last night.

In a statement, Mr Kelly said: 'I am delighted to be able to accept Eamon Gilmore's invitation to run for the Labour party in what will be the most important election for a generation.'

Ulick Burke not to run in next election

Separately, Fine Gael TD Ulick Burke has confirmed that he will not be contesting the next General Election.

Mr Burke represents Galway East after regaining his Dáil seat at the 2007 General Election.

The 67-year-old is the Fine Gael Deputy Education Spokesperson with Special Responsibility for Lifelong Learning and School Transport.

Earlier this week, the second Fine Gael TD for Galway East, Paul Connaughton, also confirmed that he would not be standing in the next election.

Galway East is a four-seater constituency with two sitting Fianna Fáil and two Fine Gael TDs.
