Council crews in various counties today worked to clear up debris following stormy conditions last night.

Around 300 homes were without electricity this afternoon because of the storm.

High winds brought down power lines and trees onto roads in Westmeath, Longford, Kildare, Sligo and Tipperary.

The ESB said 10,000 customers had electricity outages at different times yesterday, with worst-hit areas including Lettermore in Connemara and Ennis in Co Clare.

The strong winds and rain also made for difficult driving conditions.

Four Irish Ferries' sailings on the Jonathan Swift between Dublin and Holyhead and the Stena Line 1.15pm sailing from Dún Laoghaire to Holyhead were cancelled. All passengers were advised to contact their ferry operators.

Meanwhile, there has been a call for the introduction of emergency measures to support families living along the River Shannon.

Rural groups in the midlands said the early nature of the flooding in the last two years is leading to prolonged periods of isolation for the elderly.

Flooding is particularly bad along the Shannon in Co Roscommon.
