Brussels - Aer Lingus reinstates flights

Flights in and out of Belgian airspace have been suspended due to a strike by air traffic controllers.

Ryanair cancelled all flights in and out of Charleroi from 3pm.

Aer Lingus have confirmed that the two flights to Brussels tomorrow which were cancelled eearlier this evening have now been reinstated and will travel.

Passengers are advised to check in as normal.

Belgium's air safety authority Belgocontrol said controllers had stopped work at 2pm (1pm Irish time), but it gave no explanation for the strike.

The sudden action, announced late yesterday evening, is due to last for 24 hours.

Belgocontrol said it is in talks with air traffic controllers to try to end it sooner.

A spokesman for Brussels Airport said around 50 flights to and from the airport have already been cancelled due to the strike.

Belgian media has reported that the strike was related to some staff being moved from the city of Charleroi to Brussels.
