Katie Taylor has won a Women’s World Boxing Championship gold medal after beating her Chinese opponent tonight in Barbados.

The win is Ms Taylor's third straight victory in the event, following previous triumphs in 2006 and 2008.

The Bray woman achieved victory beating China’s Cheng Dong 18-5.

She edged the first round 4-2, before stretching it to 10-2 in the second round and finishing off her opponent in assured fashion in the third.

President Mary McAleese was among the first to offer Ms Taylor her congratulations saying: ‘this is a remarkable sporting feat, of which we can all be immensely proud.'

‘All of Ireland was willing Katie on this evening,’ she added.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen said it was a fantastic achievement and that once again Katie had done Ireland proud.
