Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has said his party is now focused on winning the next election, which he said would not be far away.

Speaking at the special Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting in Waterford, Mr Kenny said it was time for the Government to go.

Parliamentary party chairman Padraig McCormack echoed those remarks, insisting that the party would work effectively in the wake of the trauma caused by the failed leadership challenge.

The West Galway TD said those involved were all mature people and would get over any tensions caused by the heave.

Predicting an election next spring he said it was in the interests of the country that Fine Gael TDs worked together to remove what he called a 'discredited Government'
