Kilkenny's attempt to win a fifth All-Ireland hurling title in a row was stopped in its tracks by a determined Tipperary side at Croke Park.

The 2009 beaten finalists made up for last year's disappointment by ending the winning run of Brian Cody's side in comprehensive fashion.

Liam Sheedy's side produced a strong attacking display, aided by a Lar Corbett hat-trick as they swept to a 26th success.

Kilkenny's first championship defeat in 22 games was delivered in compelling fashion and Brian Cody's gamble on attacker Henry Shefflin's knee did not come off as he was forced to retire injured after just 12 minutes.

The final score was 4-17 to 1-18.

The game was watched and listened to by Irish people across the world and over 80,000 spectators to GAA headquarters.
