At least 16 people were killed when a power generator exploded in a market in the centre of Basra.
Around 110 people were injured in the explosion in the Iraqi city.
The head of the security committee in the Basra council said it was unclear whether the explosion was the result of a terrorist attack.
One eyewitness told Reuters that there were three explosions in the crowded market area.
