A raid on a post office in Ballsbridge in Dublin has been foiled by an off-duty garda.

A man armed with a sawn-off shotgun went into the post office on Shelbourne Road at about 2.30pm yesterday and demanded money.

He escaped with a sum of cash but was tackled by an off-duty garda nearby. A patrol car arrived at the scene and the man was arrested.

The 41-year-old is being detained at Donnybrook Garda Station.

No one was injured.
