Dublin City Council has confirmed that three swimming pools threatened with closure will now remain open until the end of the year.

Dublin City Manager John Tierney has stated that savings have been found to keep the pools at Sean McDermott St, Crumlin and Coolock open for the final four months of 2010.

The pools were due to close at the start of the year to save €1m from the council's budget.

Community protests and lobbying urged €600,000 be found to keep the pools open for six months.

Cost cutting and reduced opening hours will allow this money to last until the end of August.

The council has been able to save more money by delaying the opening of other community facilities in Poppintree and Ballybough.

Mr Tierney has said that the council is facing a €15m deficit at the end of the year and that the future of the pools will be under threat again next year.

Councillor Aódhan Ó Ríordáin of Labour has welcomed the reprieve saying 'this decision will give councillors the opportunity to fight for their survival again during the estimates process.'
