The Taoiseach has said he will make all relevant documents from his department available to the committee, which is drawing up the terms of reference for the banking inquiry.

Brian Cowen said he would also make himself available to the committee.

He said he would be anxious to deal with any issues that might be raised surrounding his department’s role in the economic crisis.

The Taoiseach is appearing before the Select Committee on Finance and the Public Service to discuss the cost of running his department.

Brian Cowen also said the cost of the Moriarty Tribunal is currently at just under €40m.

Mr Cowen said the cost of the inquiry up to the end of May this year is €39.57m.

He said the final bill could not be accurately estimated at this time as third-party costs have yet to be worked out.
