A court in Australia has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 19 years in prison for his part in attacking Corkman David Keohane in Sydney in August 2008.

Thomas Issako from Bankstown, Sydney, pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Keohane in the assault in the Coogee area of the city.

He was told he will serve at least 14 years in prison.

He was acquitted of attempted murder in March of this year.

Mr Keohane suffered multiple head injuries and facial fractures during the attack, which caused brain damage and led to him spending seven months in a coma.

The Court heard that he now must use a wheelchair, needs 24-hour supervision and that he would be dependent on anti-convulsive medication for the foreseeable future.
