Higher petrol and diesel prices, along with a rise in mortgage interest repayments, helped fuel a slight increase of 0.2% in consumer prices in April, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

However, the annual cost of living continues to fall, albeit at a slower rate than previously, with the value of the basket of goods measured by the CSO costing 2.1% less in April than it did in the same month last year.
The largest annual decrease in prices can be found in the clothing and footwear sector, where prices have dropped 10.9%, and in the food and non-alcoholic beverage sectors, where prices have fallen 7.1%.
However, during April, prices in the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels section increased by 1.5%, while transport costs increased 0.6%.
Sales led to the cost of clothing, footwear, furnishings, household equipment and routines household maintenance falling in April.
