The union representing mid-ranking civil servants has voted to accept the Croke Park pay and reform agreement by a margin of 2 to 1.

The Public Service Executive Union, which has around 11,000 members, is the first public sector union to complete its ballot on the agreement.

Its leaders had recommended acceptance of the proposals and 67% of members voted in favour, with 33 % voting against.

PSEU General Secretary Tom Geraghty said that after a robust debate within the union, the members had voted in favour of a degree of certainty in very uncertain circumstances.

Other public sector unions will deliver their ballot results over the coming four weeks.

Elsewhere, talks aimed at clarifying the agreement have adjourned for the evening.

Representatives of public sector unions met the chairmen of the talks, Kieran Mulvey and Kevin Foley, this evening to try to finalise a series of clarifications aimed at allaying union concerns about the agreement.

It had been expected that the clarifications would be issued before now, so that union members currently voting on the proposals would have certainty about the scope and implications of the deal.

They are not now expected to emerge before tomorrow afternoon.
