Jobseekers facing long wait for allowance

Some people have had to wait over four months to have their claims for jobseekers' allowance processed by the Department of Social Protection, according to new figures.

People claiming in Mullingar have the longest wait at 16.84 weeks, closely followed by Navan Road in Dublin at 16.66 weeks and Navan town in Co Meath at 15.56 weeks.

The national average is 7.10 weeks according to the figures released by Minister for Social Protection Eamon Ó Cuív.

There are 52,815 people around the country waiting for a decision to be made on their claim, which is a reduction of 7,000 on the figures for January.

In Navan and Trim 23% of claimants are waiting to have their claims processed, compared to the national average of 10%.
