Tyres - New regulations

Industry experts have warned that thousands of motorists may not pass the NCT because their car tyres do not meet new regulations introduced this month.

The AA and the ITIA says they are receiving calls from concerned motorists about the problem.

The Tyre Industry Association estimates that 50,000 tyres here do not conform to the European standard that is a now a requirement to pass the NCT.

Ireland is the last country in Europe to start testing cars for the 'E-mark'. The Road Safety Authority and the NCT are advising motorists to check their tyres.

The Irish Tyre industry Association said today that motorists who have kept their receipts should return the tyres to suppliers for replacement.

Since the regulations came in to place more than 20 people a day are failing the National Car Test because they do not have an 'E-mark' on their tyres.
