The organisation went into administration in late 2008 putting the savings of 10,000 people at risk. The body did not qualify for government support.

Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness met Mr Brown in London for talks on the efforts of Stormont politicians to secure aid for the Society.

Following the meeting, Mr Robinson said work would continue to try to secure a settlement for savers but warned the process could not be rushed.

He added that he would do what he could to assist those affected.

'I have always had the support of the Deputy First Minister in making progress on this issue.'
