Boston Scientific has confirmed that it plans to reduce its workforce by up to 175 jobs.
Boston Scientific Galway currently employs 3,000 people at Ballybritt.
Last June, the company announced a €91m investment in Reseach and Development at the Galway plant with the creation of 45 new jobs.
A highly-educated and skilled workforce were cited as a key part of the decision to make further strategic investment in Galway.
Boston Scientific has since closed its Donegal facility, which employed 120 people, and moved all manufacturing to Galway.
The CEO at Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle, said the loss of 175 jobs was a blow to Galway but must be seen in perspective.
He said there were 5,000 people working for Boston Scientific in Ireland and 3,000 of those were in Galway.
He said last year's investment was a strong indication of the company's continued commitment to the region.
A spokesperson for Boston Scientific would not confirm if any of the 175 job losses were full-time positions.
She said consultation with staff was ongoing.
