Schools had been scheduled to re-open today after the Christmas break.

However, dangerous conditions in many parts of the country, both rural and urban, have forced what looks like a majority of the country's schools to remain closed.

Others have returned after the break to find burst or frozen pipes. Most of these schools do not plan to open now until Monday.

In terms of public school transport Bus Éireann says the majority of schools it would service are closed.

Where schools may be open the bus company is still assessing whether many routes will be operated.

It has already cancelled services in parts of county Cork and in the Clonmel area.
