An Egyptian soldier has been shot dead during clashes at the Rafah border crossing into Gaza.
It is understood the shots were fired from the Gaza side of the border.
Two Palestinians were earlier shot and wounded by Egyptian soldiers targeting youths throwing stones.
Another ten were wounded when Hamas security officials used batons and teargas, and fired shots in the air to disperse 200 Palestinians who had been throwing stones over the border fence.
The incidents took place following a demonstration called by Hamas to protest Egypt's construction of an underground barrier meant to stop smuggling through cross-border tunnels.
At least 55 people, including one Irishman, were injured this morning during clashes between Egyptian police and pro-Palestinian activists.
The activists are trying to take a convoy of relief supplies to Gaza.
Over 500 international volunteers, including several from Ireland, blocked the gate at the port in El-Arish to protest after Egypt insisted that some of the goods pass through Israel.
The organisers of the convoy want all the supplies to enter Gaza via the Egyptian-controlled Rafah crossing.
Cairo has imposed strict regulations and restrictions on pro-Palestinian foreign activists who have held protests in Egypt since late December to mark the first anniversary of Israel's three-week offensive on Hamas-ruled Gaza.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that an Irishman travelling with the aid convoy suffered minor injuries in the protest yesterday evening.
The Irish Embassy is providing consular assistance and has been in direct contact with the man, who is believed to be from Cork.
