The funeral has taken place in Co Kildare of former Government Minister and Labour Party TD Justin Keating who died on New Year's Eve aged 79.

A Humanist commemoration took place at Mr Keating's former farmhouse near Ballymore Eustace.

President Mary McAleese and Taoiseach Brian Cowen were represented there by their Aides de Camp.

Also present were many of Mr Keating's political colleagues including former Taoisigh Garret FitzGerald and Liam Cosgrave.

Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan, Labour leader Eamon Gilmore, former Labour leader Ruairi Quinn, Labour TDs Michael D Higgins and Liz McManus, as well as SIPTU President Jack O'Connor were in attendance.

Songs including the International were sung during the ceremony, which will be followed by burial at Eadestown Cemetery Naas.

The chief mourners were Mr Keating's widow Barbara, son David and daughters Carla and Aislish. Also taking part in the ceremony were members of the Humanist Association of which Mr Keating served as president.
