Woman dies falling from nursing home window

An 82-year-old woman has died after she fell from a second storey window at a nursing home in Cork City.

Maura Looney, a widow from Congress Road, Turner's Cross in Cork just checked into the nursing home yesterday and was due to receive two weeks respite care there.

Mrs Looney died after she fell from a second storey window at the Care Choice private nursing home at Middle Glanmire Road in Montenotte in Cork at 7.30am.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.

A Garda investigation is underway into the woman's death.

In a statement, the owners of Care Choice Nursing Home described Mrs Looney's death as a tragic accident and said everyone involved was in shock.

Care Choice Nursing Home said it had contacted the HSE, the Health Information Quality Authority and the Gardai immediately and was working closely with them.
