There has been a small increase in the number of people out of work in Northern Ireland. The figure increased by 200 to 54,000.

The unemployment rate was estimated at 6.6% for the period August to October 2009.

This was slightly lower than the 6.8% in the previous quarter, but was up from the 4.4% rate for the same period a year ago.

The rate remained below the UK average (7.9%) and was also lower than the EU rate (9.2%) and the 13.0% rate in the Republic for September.

Over the year the number of people in Northern Ireland claiming unemployment benefits has increased by 56% or 19,300 people.

One in three of those claiming unemployment benefits is under 25.

The figures also show the number of new jobs created has fallen to 701,730, representing a fall of 5,010 over the quarter and 25,600 over the year.

The Northern Ireland Enterprise Department said the decrease over the quarter was driven by declines in the manufacturing, service and construction sectors.
