The Emerald Star cruiser company is to downsize its operations in Ireland, in what has been described as a major blow to tourism along the Shannon-Erne waterway.

Local politicians and business people say dozens of jobs will be lost as a result of cruisers being taken out of service and moved abroad.

The company currently employs around 50 staff at its three bases in Carrick-on Shannon in Leitrim, Portumna in Galway and Belturbet in Cavan.

It is understood that around 20 jobs are to go immediately in sales and marketing.
