The body of an Irishman who had been missing in Thailand has been recovered.

24-year-old Michael O'Brien from Templeogue in Dublin went missing last Tuesday when he went surfing around Koh Phangan island.

Mr O'Brien had been living in Thailand for a number of years and was married to a Thai national with whom he had a child.

The 24-year-old's father had been visiting him at the time.

His family is receiving consular assistance through the Irish consulate in Bangkok and embassy in Malaysia.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that his body was recovered on Saturday.
