Microsoft investigates Hotmail hacking

Microsoft is investigating reports that thousands of Hotmail passwords have been hacked and posted online.

A report on technology blog neowin.net claims details of over 10,000 accounts had been posted to a website. The blog suggested the accounts had been hacked or had been collected as part of a phishing scheme.

Neowin claims the details were posted on 1 October to pastebin.com and that most of the hacked emails accounts were based in Europe.

In a statement to RTE News, Microsoft said it is 'actively investigating' the claims and would not be making any further comments until tomorrow morning.

According to neowin.net, @hotmail.com, @msn.com and @live.com accounts are affected.

Hotmail is currently the largest web-based email service.
