The Stormont Sports Minister has said public funding for GAA clubs in Northern Ireland could be withdrawn if the teams are named after dead paramilitaries.
Officials are currently examining clauses in the grant making arrangements for sport to advise if changes should be considered.
Last August, there was outrage amongst unionist politicians following a republican hunger strike commemoration at the Galbally club in Co Tyrone.
The GAA launched an investigation after photos of people dressed in balaclavas and carrying replica guns at the event were placed on the Internet.
Stormont Sports Minister Nelson McCausland of the DUP now says there is no place in sport for the naming of clubs, grounds or competitions after deceased terrorists.
He said the practice was not in keeping with the promotion of good relations, as required under the equality legislation.
Officials are to examine the current terms and conditions to consider if there should be changes in the way sports grants are allocated.
