The Taoiseach has described the waste of hundreds of millions of euro of taxpayers' money in the public service as unacceptable.

Speaking in Kerry, Brian Cowen was referring to the spending highlighted in the latest report of the Comptroller and Auditor General into the public service accounts.’

Mr Cowen said public bodies would have to learn the lessons of the report and ensure that mistakes are not repeated.

The Taoiseach is in Killarney today canvassing for a Yes vote in the Lisbon Treaty Referendum.

He visited the Liebherr Crane Factory in town.

The German-owned factory employs almost 600 people.

Mr Cowen said the plant was a reminder of the fundamental link between Ireland and the rest of Europe, and that link should be maintained.
