An Irish language school in Co Down has been damaged in what is believed to be an arson attack early today.

Three classrooms at Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche in Castlewellan were damaged in the attack at around 4am.

The school is situated in the grounds of Down Council Community Hall and the 60 pupils are housed in the three mobile classrooms that have been destroyed and two more in the hall.

Pupils are due to return for the start of the new school year on Tuesday and they will not be delayed.

Sinn Féin MLA Willie Clarke said: 'This arson attack has destroyed this school and has shocked the community, the teachers and those who attend the school.'

The PSNI said they were investigating the fire and forensic experts were examining the remains.
