Consumer prices still falling

The cost of living is continuing to fall, according to the latest Consumer Price Index from the CSO.

Prices fell by 5.9% in the year to July.

However, when mortgage interest payments are stripped out, the cost of living is down 2% on an annual basis.

The biggest price cuts continue to be in clothing and food.

The cost of some services is actually going up, particularly insurance, which is up almost 20% compared to last year.

Retail sales figures also out today show an improvement in June but sales are still down 10% compared to last year.
