A Co Wicklow man has been found dead on a beach in Zanzibar, Tanzania, following a suspected mugging.

The body of Rob Stringer, 26, was discovered on a beach in Zanzibar at 8am yesterday morning.

He had suffered head injuries and as his wallet and shoes were missing it is believed he may have been the victim of a mugging.

The man had just finished an eight-week period working for the Irish charity Camara, which provides second-hand computers and other technological aid to African countries.

Local media are reporting that police have arrested a man in connection with Mr Stringer's death.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing assistance to the man's family.

The Irish embassy in Dar-es-Salaam is working on the ground with the Tanzanian officials.

The local authorities are investigating the Irish man's death and are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination.
